    Shoutbox

There is a trial Shoutbox set up at the bottom of the home page. It should only be viewable to registered users. Feel free to use it, but I can't promise it will stay. All depends on what it does to the server loads. If it becomes a resource issue I'll look at externally hosted chat (addon chat).

Can you guys currently see the "MCG Chatbox Evo" shoutbox at the bottom of the forum?

Need some input. Do you guys like the chatbox the way it currently appears on the bottom of the main forum page (with the option to open it to a full window) or would you like to see it on all forum pages? I'm reluctant to do the second because it means more server hits.

Related, do you want the full window button to just open a larger display in the current tab or do you want it to open a new window? I'm leaning toward opening a new window so users could continue to navigate the site and keep the chat open in another window if they want.

I also increased the size of the embedded chatbox a bit so it's a little more usable.

Let me know if you have issues with bugs or if you have any requests and I'll see what options I have available.

Just at bottom of home page and opening to a new window works well, I think.

Adam, I've only tried from work, where I only have IE7 available. Bugs are expected especially with IE. The quoted text boxes stay fixed and scrolling text gets masked by the quoted text boxes. Is there a way to prevent the timeout happening, or so quickly? It closes out in about 5 minutes and says page needs to be refreshed to continue.

Let me see what I can do about the timeout. I set it at five minutes so I wouldn't rack up SQL queries when people just have the page open in a background tab. There may be a way to configure a specific instance of window to not time out (the full chat view being the one I'm thinking of).

Is the quote function worth having? I can just eliminate that optional BB code.

I don't see a quote function needed for chatting, but you all may be doing things I don't normally do.
I have not tried it yet, been tied up at work.... If I worked in porn, that would be cool, but I don't

Chatbox is currently down. It'll be back in some form this evening.

There is an add-on chat box at the bottom of the Off-Topic forum currently. You have to type a name to enter.

You can reach the same chatbox via the following link: MSS Chat

The other chatbox looked like it was hitting the server pretty hard once we got up over 15 users on the forum at once. I'll probably activate it again briefly this evening to see what happens.

In the meantime I'm looking at our options. One is the add-on chat, which can be upgraded to more robust versions for a fee ($80-125 per year). Another is going to a better hosting service in general (VPS) to allow us to host the chat. The last option is most obvious, and that's simply not having the chat at all.

I never use it and cannot see the value. But I'm old and curmudgeonly.

Dear god, don't foot the bill for that.

Here's my take, those that come here to learn and soak up the technical side of the hobby (see Manifesto) won't bother with the chat. A simple OT is way more than needed. Those that have nothing better to do that used to waste all their time in DSSMA will be here "chatting" and not building or contributing content.

So make it and option and bury it, otherwise you got rif-raf.

<- also old, crusty and curmudgeonly.
